WWE Summerslam
The WWE Summerslam is a professional pay-per-view event that is held every August. It is considered as the biggest event in summer and one of original “Big Four” pay-per-view events of WWE, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and Survivor Series.
In the 1980′s, the main competitor of Vince McMahon is the Jim Crockett Promotions. The successful Starrcade pay-per-view of Jim Crockett gave McMahon the inspiration to make the WrestleMania franchise. The WrestleMania III has become the most succesful professional wrestling pay-per-view event in history and beat his competitor, JCP. After the success of the WrestleMania, McMahon then made the Survivor Series franchise which aired the same day as the Starrcade is broadcasted in November 1987. The event defeated JCP in ratings and later on, McMahon made the Royal Rumble which airs for free on the USA Network in January 1988. To make retribution, JCP made the Clash of the Champions event which aired same time with WrestleMania IV, the latter generated higher ratings which then results to the brankruptcy of Crockett. The JCP was sold to Ted Turner, and renamed it as World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
To continue the success of the pay-per-view programs and capitalized the success of the previous events McMahon made, he added more pay-per-views line up. In addition, he created an event for August, and named it as Summerslam. Summerslam became one of World Wrestling Federation (today WWE)’s most successful events in wrestling industry. WWE Summerslam is one of the “Big Four” pay-per-views, including the WrestleMania, Survivor Series, and Royal Rumble.
The first Summerslam was held in New York at Madison Square on August 29, 1988 where ten professional wrestling matches were featured. The main match of the preliminary rounds was the WWF Intercontinental Championship match, where The Ultimate Warrior and the reigning champion The Honky Tonk Man matched for the title. The main event was the battle between The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage) and their long time rivals The Mega Bucks (Ted DiBiase and André the giant).
Last year, the WWE Summerslam took place on August 14, 2011 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The first preliminary bout was a six tag team match between Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, and Rey Mysterio against The Miz, R-Truth and Alberto Del Rio. The next battle was between Sheamus and Mark Henry. It was then followed by the Divas faced off featured Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix. Wade Barrett faced Daniel Bryan in the next battle. The main event was for the World Heavy Weight Championship where Randy Orton and Christian faced each other, while for the WWE Championship was the battle between John Cena and CM Punk.
The Summerslam believed to have the most successful event in wrestling history. It was announced that last year’s Summerslam marked as the highest Summerslam event ever held at the Staples Center. It attracted a sellout crowd of over 17,000 fans and garnered a gross sale of more than $1million.
The WWE Summerslam in this year is scheduled on August 19, 2012, still at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The main event will be announced soon.
